The pace does not pick up until the end, but this book promises sequels with more action and intrigue that may entice readers to persevere. Readers who enjoy slow, in-depth world building may enjoy the mythology and makeup of this Scandinavian-inspired world however, the characters have slippery, ever-shifting personalities that make them hard to care for, and a huge betrayal at the end of the novel is shocking if only for its implausibility. Each success unlocked the Loresmith forge, allowing Ara to. Each of Ara’s perilous pursuits of the gods was a trial. It felt a bit more mature and it offered more POVs, which I appreciated. Though the premise is unique, this first book of a planned series is mostly buildup with little immediate payoff. Graced with a video game feel, the second Loresmith book is packed with tons of action and filled with quests.
